Distribution Management System
PEA is modernizing its power system distribution network by installing distribution automation (DA) facilities in it HV/MV substations and on it’s MV feeders. A large-scope Distribution Management System (DMS) is also being installed to allow remote operations of the distribution network. This hierarchical system will provide PEA with its first ever computer-based distribution dispatching centers.

The DA and DMS procurement is part of PEA’s Distribution Dispatching Center(DDC) Project 1^st stage, which is partially funded by a loan from the World Bank. The project includes a new System Management Center (SMC) and five new Area Distribution Dispatching Centers (ADDC). The SMC manages ADDC power system operations from PEA headquarters in Bangkok, whereas the ADDC’s perform their power system operations from sites within their own service territories. This distribution system automation and management project is believed to be the largest of its kind ever undertaken in the world.

SCADA Communication
PEA telecommunication network for SCADA communication comprises the SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) network via fiber optic cable, DMRL (Digital Microwave Radio Link), TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) and leased line. It links the System Management Center (SMC) and five Area Distribution Dispatching Centers (ADDCs). The communication in the distribution network uses the MARS (Multiple Address Radio System). The MARS consist of MARS Master, a hub of radio communication, and MARS Remote installed on the distribution poles. Moreover, the GSM Modem is also employed to control the switchable capacitor in the distribution network.
